From that twangy Southern intro to the the vocal strain (and I do mean of strain) of Lisa Conway makes you want Christmas to never come. Not so you can revel in this tune a little longer-but in hopes that this would never have been created.
I am not being totally fair here- if you are in to the stereotypical, Fiona/Amy whine then Del Bel is your band. Vocals a plenty for artsy girls who exist on wheat thins and coffee. This song will soar on Tumblr.
Lyrically there is no redemption. Boring story telling by folks who take themselves a bit too seriously. Disagree on that? Despite their cheeky Facebook cover this Southern Ontario band are a bit too University cool for me. The darlings of the Canadian musical press seem to have been around since 2011, yet the 516 ‘likes’ make me wonder if they’re also Toronto’s best kept secret? (thank you).
Back to the tune. The high pitched whine sing song (it’s possible- seriously listen to the tune!) and the almost warped sounding musical accompaniment give a sense of discomfort and desolation- and that’s exactly what Xmas in Prison would be! It’s consistently bad. What I will also point out is this is the type of band with a psychotic dedicated fan base who sit on their Mac’s all day bitching and tweeting- so party it up kids. I do believe my peers here at rocknyc will adore this tune- let’s see if I am odd man out.
I have never been a fan of this coffee house sound and yup- I think I am too old to find it as ‘art’ in any way- just another Beardo and The Waif band, but it’s always wise to have a Christmas tune to score some extra attention.
