After the desert, the sea? According to the New York Times, Coachella, the Southern California Music and Arts Festival is now introducing S.S. Coachella, a music cruise… actually there will be two cruises this December, and people will be able to sail from Florida to Jamaica or to the Bahamas while listening to Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Girl Talk, James Murphy, Sleigh Bells,… and many others.
So is this the next step now? How to diversify the formula around music and multiply festivals, at sea, at air (why not?) and what else? Ticket prices range from $500 to $9,000 (for a ‘sky suite’ with veranda) per person, aboard ‘the Celebrity Silhouette, a 1,000-foot, 122,000-ton ship with room for 2,800 fans, cabana-style alcoves and a small theater that Mr. Tollett called a mini ‘Royal Albert Hall’’.
The prices include lodging, food and entertainment, but I just wonder where you could possibly sleep for 500 bucks,.. on the deck?
Cruises are all the rage right now, there was a Weezer cruise not long ago, but for me they always sound like such something of the past. However, they seem to present quite a few advantages: No curfew, no long drive through the hot desert, no camping, and close encounters with the stars, as a matter of fact, a wine tasting with James Murphy is part of the schedule.
By the way, I thought that Murphy had retired from music? But, what's the difference, cruises have always sounded like a thing for retirees… Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10 am PDT.
