Jenny Lewis is asking herself existentialist questions, and ‘no matter how hard she tries to be one of the guys, there’s a little something inside that won’t let her’, ‘no matter how hard she tries to have an open mind, there’s a little voice inside that prevents her’… Does she want to tell us she doesn’t belong?
That’s actually the catchy chorus of her new song, ‘Just One of the Guys’, posted on YouTube and it has a bit of that old Fastball’s song ‘Out of my Head’ – that you could not get out of your head a few years ago. Yes, it is that catchy, but the lyrics reveal more angst than the bright-sounding melody: ‘There’s a little clock inside that keeps ticking’… ‘I’m just another lady without a baby’, she sings with her beautiful voice. With her rainbow-spring-like suit, Jenny looks as cute and cool as usual, and she doesn’t seem to stress out too much though. Plus, she is still very young but, as an older female, I totally get what she means, the pressure to conform to society and have children as a woman is very strong and also very weird, however, I have totally reached the conclusion that children are overrated on the happiness scale in this pushy world.
‘Just One of the Guys’ was produced by Beck – although I can’t really recognize anything Beck-like in this song, it is a true Jenny Lewis tune – and it is also the first single of her upcoming album ‘The Voyager’, on which she collaborates with many different artists such as Ryan Adams and her boyfriend Jonathan Rice. ‘The Voyager’ is set to be released on July 29th via Warner Bros, and Jenny is currently on tour (see the dates below).
