Iggy Azalea- Cringe-Worthy or Applause-Worthy?

Female rapper Iggy Azalea has been growing in popularity and I’ve avoided listening to her for this long, and I’m pretty proud of myself for it.  Seeing a new girl step into the music scene has been fascinating for me because she’s half mess, half badass.  I can’t quite pin my opinion on her.

Half of me really hates her.  From the one song I’ve heard, “Fancy”, she has an annoying voice, can’t rap (I don’t know anything about rap but she’s god awful), and an overall earsore.  She’s received some backlash for being white, too, and having a strong Australian accent.  But what do you expect when you rap a line like, “When the relay starts,  I’m a runaway slave master.”  Later on she realized she should maybe apologize- “In all fairness, it was a tacky and careless thing to say and if you are offended, I am sorry. Sometimes we get so caught up in our art and creating or trying to push boundaries, we don’t stop to think how others may be hurt by it. In this situation, I am guilty of doing that and I regret not thinking things through more.”
The video for her hit single, “Fancy”, is a carbon copy of the film, “Clueless”, the ultimate white girl fantasy.  It’s boring and she doesn’t even sing; she has Charli XCX do it for her.  She seems disinterested and unattached, and it’s almost painful to watch and listen to.
However, the little tiny feminist inside me appreciates her as a woman.  She is confident, she is strange looking, she doesn’t always wear makeup at big events where she’s walking on a red carpet and being photographed.  She’s completely unafraid and stands up for herself.  She didn’t even start a major controversy when she began to be borderline sexually harassed by fans.  “I’m only doing like 2000-seaters, but I still have to have barriers even if it’s like 200 people,” she said.  She no longer crowd surfs at shows, because people try to touch her inappropriately, and surprisingly, it’s more girls than boys, cos “girls think it’s cool.”
She’s definitely making waves, both positively and negatively, in the music scene.  Regardless, she’s big and bad and bold and not gonna stop any time soo
