Why I Missed Tune-Yards At Rough Trade

A late night at Rough Trade
A late night at Rough Trade

When is an 8pm door too late for a concert you really want to see? For me quite often. I had a ticket to Tune-Yards at Rough Trade yesterday and despite not being as obsessive over Nikki Nack as you are, I was gonna go, sure I was. Why wouldn’t I. Rough Trade is a tiny club and Tune-Yards is pretty good live, and I haven’t seen her in a couple of years, and, as an added plus, Dirty Projector’s Olga Bell was opening. I had a ticket, I go to a lot of shows and so really why not?

Because an 8pm start was simply too late.

I live in Queens, work in Manhattan, and Rough Trade is in Brooklyn.

So here is the maths:

6pm Work ends –so here I have two hours with nothing to do, actually three hours.

9pm Olga goes on

10pm – Tune-Yards go on.

1115pm – The show ends.

1am I get home

2am I get to sleep

5am I wake up and get to work on the website.

Now in the normal world, in Manhattan, doors are 7am, headliner goes on at 9pm, show over by 1030pm, home by 1115, asleep by midnight: that I can do.

So bye bye Tune Yards –see you at Webster Hall.
