Hey! Remember The Kooks? Honest I drove almost six hours to see these guys about seven years ago and in a crappy club I saw what I thought would be the next big thing. I was very very wrong.
Somehow, somewhere something didn’t align and The Kooks became a nothing. I have always loved their sound, that congested Brit vocal and that poppy yet intellectual sound. They disappeared from my radar and The States weren’t loving them at all.
April 20th they’re set to release their next adventure and the first offering is tune called “Down” and…I have no idea what they’re trying to do but it simply doesn’t work and it aint gonna last. I do believe these guys need to stay in the UK- they simply wont work over here. They’re stuck in the 70s and well that goes ok in Europe. I mean c’mon James is still big in the UK, what the hell song do you know by them? Yeah.. “Laid” thats it.
“With this record we didn’t do any rehearsing beforehand,” Luke Pritchard says. “I’d write a song with Inflo or on my own, put it up and we’d all play over it. There was a real freedom to the process.” And it shows. Its horrible and the band is appearing at SXSW, as is every single bit band on Earth. They’ll get lost in the shuffle- they have no wow factor.
Bands like the Arctic Monkeys sold out but actually appealed to a greater audience. If ‘Down” is any indication of the rest of the new album, theyre polarizing themselves even more.
Game over.
