The Front Bottoms released a new version of “Twelve Feet Deep”, but it keeps on being advertised as a new song. Â However, it’s pretty obscure and not as well known as their other work, so it’s an easy mistake to make. Â I love the remake so much. Â It feels really expansive and beautiful, and it feels like it would fit on their self-titled.
Brian Sella’s vocals are stunning. Â They are smooth and perfect, fitting over the dancey music with ease. Â If you listen to the original, it seems like the first is just a lame cover of this version. Â I loved the original for such a long time, but that was only because it was all I knew. Â They not only completely revamped the tune and made it a thousand times better, but it’s more complex and still feels raw, just more like the musicians are experienced. Â The transition is so obvious, it’s like night and day.
The lyrics are undoubtedly adolescent feeling, expressing college struggles and telling the tale of a love struck and confused Brian. Â They’re now layered on top of warm and well produced instruments, a far better fit than before. Â It feels like a new TFB song, something they could’ve just written and released yesterday, and it’s that feeling that I love. Â I pray that they perform it live on their upcoming tour, because it’s definitely their best release to date. Â To be able to take a relatively previously mediocre song and make it this impressive is talent that cannot be overlooked.
