I like the Flaming Lips, I have seen them many times and I have never been disappointed, but it seems that Wayne Coyne is trying to get the attention at any price these days. Now that he can’t post naked pictures of his (ex) wife anymore, he has teamed up with Miley Cyrus and her omnipresent hanging tongue and he made sure everyone was aware of it!
Apparently Coyne and Drozd joined the pop star on stage during her show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last month and in Tulsa Arizona, and they performed ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1’ together, but now they are back in the studio to record a new version of the Beatles’ classic ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’. Coyne instagramed the event with pictures of Miley rolling a joint with ‘Yup…… Recordin with Miley… High as fuck…. #flaminglips #theflaminglips #tulsa #lovemoneyparty’. Yeah we got it, doing drugs is cool, you’re cool and high! Crying for attention? May be, but I am surrounded by people smoking weed (hey it’s Silver Lake) so who cares? Certainly not me!
Then he posted this picture of Miley with the caption: ‘Miley in the studio vomiting diamonds while singing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds!! If you’re a Beatles and John Lennon freak you gonna love love love this track!! Got Andrew from MGMT too!!!! #lovemoneyparty #lsd #beatles #musicthatishardtotwerkto #mileycyrus #freaks #flaminglips #theflaminglips #mgmt #liptattoo #fuckyeah #tulsa’
MGMT is involved too? What would John Lennon think? First of all do we really need new Beatles covers? I totally understand doing a song or two at a concert, but I am not that sure… digging around the story and it turns out that the Lips are remaking the entire ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album and beside MGMT and Miley Cyrus, Tame Impala, Foxygen, Phantogram, Birdflower (‘Within Without You’), Zorch and others may be involved. It’s not totally official yet, it was posted on the Future Heart.
The Beatles have always been an inspiration for many bands and the Lips are no exception. ‘I listened to Sgt. Pepper a lot, not realizing that huge chunks of vocals and instruments were missing’, declared Coyne to Uncut in September 2010. ‘When I hear a proper mix, it sounds wrong. My versions sound better! They have this eerie, empty quality.’ Okay, we’ll see! The Flaming Lips have already remade Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’, a King Crimson album, a Stone Roses albums, Drodz even said to Rock Sucker they were ‘trying to figure out which Led Zeppelin record we could do,’… ‘We might branch into doing a Sonic Youth record – I would love to try Evol or something.’ And they have even considered redoing Black Sabbath’s debut. I guess the Flaming Lips have become a cover band.
