So The Decemberists played in pouring rain at Boston Calling and they were glorious but I had to bail. Why? Cuz despite my love for them I will never stand in pouring rain freezing my ass off surrounded by drunk and cigarette smoking Bostonians, I would rather off myself in oncoming traffic.
But I am glad that the band is doing a small offering of live bits and are kind sort ifa little bit off hiatus. They have that cool Irish pub sound to them and despite the fact that in appearance they’re everything I hate about the ‘indie’ genre, Colin Malloys voice is beautiful and the chick with the bad haircut is a fabulous keyboardist. So it works, and works even greater with eyes closed.
But The Decemberists are part of that granola eating plain scene who bitch and moan about photos and videos. If you are one of their deciples youre going to honor their request- if you are like Rebecca Bohanan the chick who ballsed up and taped a couple tunes in Portland last week, you reap the rewards of capturing a fine tune.
“Here I Dreamt I was an Architect’ is an oldie but a goody and is done so casually in this piece that it almost feels like the old VH1 Storyteller series. Lazily performed in nasal perfection the song is timeless, most likely cuz it already sounds like a pub song your pappy sang when he returned from sea.
I single this tune out because of the comment section. One Dean Jackson had to puff up with the following statement.
“I chose to respect their request for for no video or audio recording. I was third row center for the first show, it was tempting but I resisted the urge. “
See, Dean is better than you Rebecca AND he was standing in a better spot and he wanted to make sure you knew. So Dean feels it was OK to hunt it out, find if anyone actually had the balls to defy the uber tough Colin and post something on YouTube and upon discovering it.. made sure you knew he would NEVER be so disrespectful. Dean you win the ‘Indie Knob of the Week” award.. Rebecca Bohanan, you’re a fucking goddess.
Carry on fools
