Los Angeles has so many festivals that I often have to choose between several of them during a weekend. And here is a new one I had not heard about before, ‘Taste of South Lake 2014’ that will take place in Pasadena in October.
It’s Pasadena’s largest culinary celebration, a food festival with free music! 25 restaurants are participating with live cooking demos done by celebrity chefs from 11 am to 2 pm, while some LA and international indie bands are scheduled to play from 11 am to 3 pm… Not a bad way to have your Saturday brunch, especially because it’s free, and outdoor, under LA’s eternal sunshine.
But forget about your gustative buds for a minute, the bands which are performing, are the real treat: You will be able to catch the Record Company, a rock/roots/blues trio that I have seen a couple of times (last time was at Echo Park Rising) and that will make you forget about any of your worries; they are a fantastic live band, with a John Lee Hooker explosive sound that would leave Dan Auerbach drooling. I have never seen or heard Eric Lilavois, but he is a songwriter and producer who has worked with many bands such as My Chemical Romance, Atlas Genius, Saint Motel and he is the owner of Crown City Studio in Pasadena. Damien Jurado is an indie folk/rock singer songwriter whom I have heard many times on radio (he is a NPR darling) and I will finally have the chance to catch him. Then a bit later, Salt Petal, a collective from Los Angeles, will spread their fresh surf tropical sound that recalls Os Mutantes. Finally, Los Amigos Invisbles will come from Venezuela for you. I remember hearing from them when David Byrne signed them on his label, and their songs were all over KCRW’s airwaves. They have a sunny, poppy, happy sound, based on the “gozadera’, a fusion of Latin rhythms with fiery funk and lounge music, so this will go very well with your desert.
Taste of South Lake is totally free and will take place on October 11th, at the Corporate Center Pasadena located at 251 S. Lake Avenue.
