A storm in showbiz circles
“Artists become fans of the writers and keep using them”
He didn’t really write single ‘Pillowtalk’.
Whatever you might think of Beyonce, she has exquisite taste in collaborators and they don’t get much better than Naughty Boy. The master producer already has a track record and anybody who heard his Zayn Malik track from earlier this year can only pray they work together on Zayn’s solo comeback. Till then, this is a high falutin’ ballad with Bey tackling the hook like a real pro, absolutely giving over to it. Arrow, who handles a verse like a pro, I have never heard of but we all will after this – B+
Impossibly lovely and gentle, a lost love track with Zayns lovely voice, 1D will really miss his impossibly beautiful voice and if he continues working with the truly gifted Khan, this could prove a great collaboration, while adding a touch of credence to what I was writing yesterday about Pakistan and the UK
Home – Naughty Boy, Sam Evans – Woah, a little early for Sam Smith homages though Naughty Boy is one of the first of the Rudimental-Disclosure school of EDM pop songs out of the gate – B+
Don’t – Ed Sheeran – I’ll believe most things given the opportunity, but Ed as a tousle headed ladies man, sleeping with a popular pop singer and writing songs about it? That’s pushing me to the outer limits of credibility. Maybe if he had sex appeal? – B-
It is really a first album the way first albums are meant to be, it’s like Khan couldn’t stop himself and just had all these ideas and had to run with them. The Deluxe version includes a song with Professor Green and a cover of “Get Lucky”. It’s like a vacation and a time to indulge yourself.
Can one star make that much difference in a musical theater production? It can when that one person is the sheer brilliance that is Jessie Mueller as Carole King, she sure can. A bravado vocal and acting tour de force that changed a mediocre jukebox musical story into what they were aiming for: the story of “Tapestry”. A great, star making performance
Fancy – Iggy Azalea – Addictive edm rap mash up with a strong rap and the always charming Charli XCX, when you’re hot your hot – A-
I haven’t seen Iggy on stage but I have seen Ariane and she was the pits. It’s the Lana Del Rey syndrome, a production creation that can not translate on to stage. But so what? Don’t see her live. Both “Problem” and “Fancy are great songs. That’s all.

La La La – Naughty Boy, Sam Smith – Two of the biggest names in UK neo-Northern Soul meets electro get together to define the sound that has owned the UK charts since Emile ruled the charts two years ago. The song is only ok, but Smith’s vocals are superb – A-
We’ve been waiting for something to get excited about this week and here it is: Emili Sande’s producer with a handful of excellent soul dance UK syle. The Ella Eyre song is terrific, the (six) Emili tracks all fine, Ed Sheeran over emotes but what can you expect? Hey, there’s Professor Green! And altogether this feels like a state of the art superstar UK soul album – ALBUM OF THE WEEK – A-
I am really excited about all this though specifically, I enjoyed the first Eno Hyde song “Daddy’s Car” and the second release “The Satellite” almost as much. Plus, it isn’t Eno’s fault everybody wants him to produce them. He’s not like T. Bone begging for the business.
