I write a lot about Elliott Smith’s suspicious death, but curiously, the songwriter/musician he is compared the most to, also died in mysterious circumstances. After reading more about Cobain, I actually think there are many more parallels between Elliott and Kurt’s respective deaths than between their careers or songwriting. For almost 20 years, conspiracy theories (although I hate that term when there is ground for suspicion) have been around, and private detective Tom Grant has been investigating the case. In 1994, he claimed that Cobain did not commit suicide, contrarily to the official police conclusion, but was in fact murdered. Grant has an in-depth website about the case (http://www.cobaincase.com) where you can read more than if you ever want to know about the Cobain’s story… it is kind of depressing to see that, despite the amount of info posted on this site, nobody was ever arrested for murdering Cobain, but may be things will change with time.
‘Soaked in Bleach’, set to be released in 2014 (probably around the 20th anniversary of his death?) is a new movie about the final days of Kurt Cobain. This is what Tom Grant posted on his website:
‘Please do not get this new film confused with the claims about a fictional film based on the highly inaccurate book, Heavier Than Heaven which has been falsely promoted for the past several years. I do not believe that film will ever be done. I believe it has all been a publicity stunt to keep a fading celebrity’s name in the press on a periodic basis.
I hope I’m wrong. Any film based on that terrible book or any film done under the input or control of Courtney Love will only serve to make Soaked In Bleach a much more credible account of the final days of Kurt Cobain.
I was hired as a consultant for Soaked In Bleach so I was on location during most of the filming. I also spoke on camera about the conclusions I reached during my investigation into the suspicious death of Kurt Cobain.
I believe this is going to be a groundbreaking film/documentary unlike anything we’ve seen over the past twenty years.’
This seems really interesting, I did not care at all for Gus Van Sant’s ‘Last Days’, which actually wasn’t made to bring answers, thus this new movie looks really interesting. In a casting call it was described as a film which ‘explores the death of Kurt Cobain and its aftermath, examines the competing opinions and theories surrounding his death (suicide or foul play/murder), as well as the various people tied to those theories.’ Also, it is not a biopic but will show re-enacted ‘events from multiple points of view as characters investigate Cobain’s death and begin to question the findings. The film also looks at how the media contributed to the public’s perception that Cobain’s suicide was inevitable, due to the repeated dissemination of false information about him (not necessarily deliberate on the part of the media) that eventually became perceived by the public as truth.’ Wow that sounds very close to home! Directed by Benjamin Statler, the film will star Daniel Roebuck as Tom Grant, Sarah Scott as Courtney Love, Tyler Bryan as Kurt Cobain, and August Emerson as Kurt’s best friend Dylan Carlson. So if you are like me and care about the truth, look for it at a theater near you soon!
