Peter Murphy, “Hang Up” Reviewed

when scary was pretty

Oh how I love the eerie voice of the infamous “Cut You Up’ Goth king Peter Murphy.  After haunting us with “im dead imdead imdead’ in the Bahuaus clasic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ his title was secure.  Eerie in a Vincent Price sorta way. Vocal perfection for the genre that he bought into.

As much as I want to jump in and say some sassy crap about an old man playing rockstar, I simply cannot.  Peter Murphy may look like hell but he sounds like 1981 in this updated industrial based tune.  Well, then Mr Marilyn Manson who is your idol?

This song isnt without flaw, it gets a bit too techno the lyrics a tad bit strained at times but as for integrity it is straight up solid.  The echo at times made me think I had more than one window open on my computer.  But when he hits his David Bowie notes, its awesome, when he attempts to be a hardcore singer it’s a big no.  This is a song your mother would tell you turn down.  It’s a whole lot of sound and here lies the other problem… who the hell makes a five minute song anymore?

The length of this tune is perplexing.  If they shaved off two minutes Id be outright raving.  Deduct that shout and insert more spoken word and gentleman we have a gothclub hit.

For now I can say that the intricacy of this song is impressive.  That Peter at age 56 is as fucked up in the head as ever and hopefully never cures. On that note wasnt he just busted for drunk and disorderly or something?  C’mon big boy, snap out of it. Booze killed his looks too.

Anyway this song is a shot back to the good old days. Its disturbing and annoying and that is exactly what this genre is all about. Anthemic?  Nah.  Memorable?  Yes.    At least he is over that whole dance techno thing he dabbled in.

Tour on the horizon, no doubt about it. This single is from his upcoming album titled Lion, due out June 3rd.
