Philadelphia seems to have an endless pool of musical talent, what with bands like Title Fight and The Wonder Years, and Nothing is no exception. Â I’d never heard of them before, but decided to check out a single they released called “Bent Nail”. The four-piece alternative group is incredibly talented, and I was sucked in as soon as I hit ‘play’.
The song starts off with clean and smooth instrumentals, and soft, subdued vocals. Â It’s chilling. Â The guitars provide a stunning melody that are countered with the intensity of the drums and bass. Â The singer’s voice is beautiful. Â It’s calm and there’s a gentle quality to it that is addictive. Â The articulation of his words is just perfect, and though unexpected to go with the background music, it somehow works; they somehow pull off this strange yet lovely sound.
To see if this sound was only common for this one song, I wanted to listen to their other single, “Dig”. Â It has the same haunting quality in the vocals, with the instruments taking the forefront. Â It almost has the same feel as something written by Explosions In The Sky. Â Though Explosions is entirely instrumental, it puts the focus on musicianship in the same way Nothing does. Â It’s entrancing and is an aural sedative.
Their debut full-length album, “Guilty Of Everything”, is set to be released on March 4th. Â You can preorder it here– it’s going to be fantastic.
Listen to their tune “Bent Nail”, and fall in love. Â It’s a masterpiece.
