The question wasn’t whether or not to check out the great soul singer Sam Smith, obviously the answer is yes, of course he has to be seen. The question is, whether to see him at the Apollo on Monday, June 17th, or wait three months for the Wednesday gig and my decision to wait till September was based on:
1. Monday gig? Not so good.
2. the following day I have Ringo Starr and I don’t have the energy for the double dip and who can miss Ringo.
3. A much better seat.
4. Enough time to become addicted to the album which isn’t even released yet, though the four songs I know are purely gorgeous.
And, also, I have a really busy June and a dead September so I need something to do. Smith thinks he could be the next Adele and I agree (saleswise, I prefer him in all other ways) and this could be a real opportunity to see the guy before he blows up even bigger. Personally, I think what I’ve heard of In The Lonely Hour is simply unreally brilliant and there is no excuse for not jumping on this bandwagaon at your earliest convenience. If you’re a soul guy there should be zero doubt that this guy is the huiding light of the UK’s current soul scene. He has the best pipes, it is as simple as that.
So yeah, $90 later off Stubhub but I don’t regret it at all, Sam Smith is a guiding and bright star of modern soul and must be heard.
