Margaret Conlan used to work with me years ago, a long legged, Irish Rose of a woman with a sweet disposition and an element of sass in her. I actually went to her wedding where she added Mullen to her name.
But she left the business with new husband in tow and traveled the US adding children to her family before settling back in the East Coast where she recently replied to my request on Facebook for a list of her favorite music, which I am pleased to dismantle for you… First her picks, then my opinions.
OLD STUFF
"best of van halen still one of my favorites (Can't stop loving you, Dreams, Right Now)" – It really is a good Greatest Hits but I wonder if it tells the story of the first three albums. Surely Diver Down and 1984 are worth owning one end to another.
"Allman Brothers Where it all Begins 'Soulshine' one of my absolute fave songs". – Hard to disagree with this choice, the 1994 album is the Allman Brothers last wnith Dicky Betts and the song in question is a beautiful Southern ballad by Warren Hayes. The album stiffed but it has maintained an epic grandeur and listening to it now, an album I was only vaguely aware of, is actually a fine piece of work.
"Unknown Legend Neil Young Harvest Moon" – Margaret doesn't go far enough, the entire album is absolutely lovely. As good as Harvest? Not so fast. But "Unknown Legend", the title track and "From Hank To Hendrix" are pretty awesome folk rock.
NEW STUFF
" Neon Lights 'Everybody Talks' makes me jump around the house like an idiot w/ my girls" – Well, as far as endorsements go you can't beat that now, can you? I saw em on Halloween a coupla years ago when they were pushing their first album and was pretty impressed as well. The song broke pop but the album didn't follow it much to my surprise. I would love to see Margaret and the kids jumping around to it.
"Kings of Leon, Someone Like You, Be Somebody, Sex on Fire." – My fights with KOL are legendary here at rock nyc, still hard to deny these songs so why bother trying? Though I do prefer Come Around Sundown when it comes to the album.
Thank you Margaret for sharing your musical taste, long may you boogie on the Bayou with your daughters to the Allman Brothers and Neon Trees.
