Neil Young with Lukas and Micah Nelson

Willie Nelson may be singing about weed with his pal Merle, but Neil Young hasn’t given up his political engagement. He will release an anti-Monsanto album in June,… yes the rock legend is directly attacking the multi-billion dollar GMO business and all its affiliates! An excerpt of a new song has surfaced and it is directed to Starbucks, the giant coffee business that Neil Young wants us to boycott. Starbucks has actually joined Monsanto in a lawsuit against Vermont to avoid the implementation of GMO labeling regulations, in other words, Starbucks doesn’t want you to know what is your latte!

A clip of ‘Rock Starbucks’ premiered via Democracy Now! and it sounds like a very catchy and upbeat tune, starting with laid-back whistling à la Black Lips, before Neil’s funny and ironic lyrics:

‘If you don’t like to rock Starbucks, a coffee shop/Well, you better change your station ’cause that ain’t all that we got/Yeah, I want a cup of coffee, but I don’t want a GMO/I like to start my day off without helping Monsanto/Monsanto/Let our farmers grow/What they want to grow’

I like this chorus and talking about Willie, Neil is playing with the band ‘Promise of the Real’, featuring Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah… I saw Lukas in person a few years ago and he is a cutie… but back to Neil the hero, according to Rolling Stone, he debuted the song and many others at a secret show at San Luis Obispo, California’s SLO Brewing Co. on April 16th.

It makes total sense that the Nelson sons are teaming up with Neil Young, they fight the same fight against corporations and GMOs! ‘Nobody likes Monsanto. Nobody wants GMOs in their food. I’m really proud to be on this side of history with Neil,’ said Lukas. He has even advertised this Kickstarter for GMO free family farms and his facebook page. Looking at the crowds that line up every morning at my local Starbucks, I am afraid it will take a lot more than this for Americans to boycott the giant coffee business, but it is a brave move… Neil Young may pass for an old hippie for some people, but he is one of the few rock stars standing against evil corporations like Monsanto.
