John Doe On The West Coast Express… No really…

The only thing being murdered will be Evis Presley songs

The only thing being murdered will be Evis Presley songs

Now this looks like a fun way to spend your week:

“Join John Doe and an extraordinary slate of guests on the Golden State Xpress for an unforgettable adventure on board vintage streamline railroad cars from Los Angeles to Seattle and return. Be one of just 45 participants on this journey the length of California and into Washington… our tracks hugging the ocean for over 100 miles, over brawny hills, through wide fields and high plains; past towering Mount Shasta and over the stunning Cascade Range on one of the most spectacularly scenic rail journeys on earth. JOHN DOE is your host, with musical guests EXENE CERVENKA, ROBYN HITCHCOCK and JESSE DAYTON. There will be a starting and end hotel night in Los Angeles, a kickoff show in LA, then once on board, plenty of music, laughter and camaraderie. We’ll have a naturalist with us to highlight outstanding features of our route. Live music on board in the lounge, with seating, stage and sound system – an intimate night club on wheels. Complimentary beverage service and freshly-prepared meals in the dome-lounge-diner with glass-topped 360 degree views. And any time you need to get away from it all, your private cabin is but steps away. Welcome to Roots on the Rails – an unforgettable travel experience that since 2003 has travelers returning again and again. Get ready for a non-stop musical adventure…. all aboard! for further details visit http://www.rootsontherails.com/

Only 100 miles so you gotta think, what three hours or so? Well, you’re wrong because it goes on for days, long enough for you to dust off your moves and see if you can compare conspiracy theories with Exene. The girls might have more chance with John who once slept with my girlfriend. And there is also a Dave Alvin trip! You can have a, er, Blast there as well.

Wait, here is the full monty…

JOHN DOE • EXENE CERVENKA • ROBYN HITCHCOCK • JESSE DAYTON

March 21-27, 2015, Los Angeles to Seattle and return.

THE MUSICIANS

JOHN DOE – Co-founder of LA icons X and The Knitters, and as a highly respected singer/songwriter and actor, John Doe has been making vital American music for over thirty years. This will be his second Roots on the Rails trip; his first as host.

EXENE CERVENKA – Artist, poet and musician Exene Cervenka is a relentlessly creative force. The music and art she has made with X, The Knitters, The Original Sinners and numerous side projects is never duplicative and always thought-provoking. This is Exene’s Roots on the Rails debut.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK – From The Soft Boys through The Egyptians and in his consistently engaging solo work, Robyn Hitchcock has made some of the most engaging, surreal and genuinely thought-provoking music of the modern era. We can’t wait to have the man who often dreams of trains on board!

JESSE DAYTON – On-board Attitude Adjustment Hour host and sideman extraordinaire, honky tonk hero Jesse Dayton will grace The Golden State Xpress with the incredible chops he’s demonstrated in his work with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. And Rob Zombie.

THE TRIP

SATURDAY 21 March
Los Angeles hotel check-in in afternoon. Shuttle bus to/from evening concert. Priority admission to concert.

SUNDAY 22 March
You’ll feel like a 1940’s movie star as we board our private cars, attached to the rear of Amtrak’s COAST STARLIGHT, in the mission-deco masterpiece of Los Angeles Union Station. Departure is at 10:15 am. As we head north, we’ll have a nature talk and music program in the Performance Car as our train runs for over 100 miles hugging the rugged California Coast. At San Luis Obispo we cut inland, climbing the stunning Cuesta Grade, and as the sun goes down, dinner is served. Evening concerts follow, as we pass through Oakland and Sacramento. The miles slide by effortlessly as music and socializing continue well into the night.

MONDAY 23 March
During the night our train turns north through Chico and Dunsmuir, past snow-covered Mt. Shasta (a spectacular sight for early risers), and then over the Cascade Mountains, one of the most breathtaking crossings of a mountain range in the US, passing through over 20 tunnels! Breakfast, lunch and dinner on board, with nature program and music in the Performance Car. Arrive Seattle in the evening. The train serves as our hotel for the next two nights (patrons wishing to stay at nearby hotels are welcome to do so; we are happy to provide suggestions). We’ll have the lounge car open late for night owls.

TUESDAY 24 March
Continental breakfast is available on board, with the day free to explore this fascinating city. In the evening there will be a concert in the city featuring our artists. Your tickets are provided.

WEDNESDAY 25 March
Our train departs Seattle at 9:45 am. We’ll have a workshop and concerts in the Performance Car, continental breakfast, lunch and dinner in the diner and spectacular scenery all day! Night falls as we cross the Cascades.

THURSDAY 26 March
During the night we retrace our route, with morning arrival in the Bay Area. The return journey to LA unfolds onboard with breakfast, workshops, lunch, an Open Mic, a concert finale and dinner, with arrival in Los Angeles scheduled for 9:00 pm. Hotel accommodations are again provided.

FRIDAY 27 March
Hotel checkout and return home (additional nights at our group rate are available with advance notice).

THE TRAIN

The lovingly restored streamlined railroad cars of LA Rail bring the golden age of rail travel back to life. Freshly prepared meals and complimentary beverage service (tap beer, red and white wines, vintage sodas, coffee, tea, etc.) are included in your ticket. There is nothing like dining high above the rails in a dome lounge car. When not in service for meals, SILVER SPLENDOR serves as our lounge space. Our performance car is the stunning OVERLAND TRAIL, dating from 1949, originally a Southern Pacific barbershop/lounge car.

Sleepers PACIFIC SANDS, SALISBURY BEACH and PALM LEAF provide a range of accommodations – from classic Pullman “Sections” – upper and lower berths for one or two a la “Some Like It Hot” – to streamliner-era private cabins.

Visit our page on different types of accommodations on board. A cabin designed for one is a ROOMETTE, while a cabin for two is called a DOUBLE BEDROOM. Semi-private BERTH SPACE is the most economical travel choice – facing bench seats by day, wide bunk-style beds by night, with privacy afforded by a heavy curtain.

PRICE

BE ONE OF THE FIRST 12 PEOPLE TO SIGN UP AND TAKE $100 PER PERSON OFF THE PRICES LISTED. OR SIGN UP FOR BOTH THE GOLDEN STATE XPRESS AND DAVE ALVIN’S WEST OF THE WEST AND TAKE $250 OFF EACH TRIP

PRIVATE CABIN: $3,889.00 per person for a private enclosed sleeping car space (one or two person rooms). Price includes all train activities, meals and beverage service (soft drinks, coffee/tea, water, beer/wine) enroute, facilities and shower in each car, two nights shared hotel room in Los Angeles (single supplement for private hotel room in LA for the two nights is $200 additional), concerts in Los Angeles and Seattle, motorcoach transport to/from LA show. Gratuities and other transfers not included.

BERTH SPACE: $3,689.00 per person for semi-private berth accommodations (upper or lower berth).

DELUXE ACCOMMODATIONS: $7689.00 per person. Available space permitting. For ONE: Single occupancy of ‘double bedroom.’ For TWO: Two ‘double bedrooms’ ensuite – with two lower beds, extended floorspace, plenty of closets and facilities in two enclosed annexes (shower is a few steps down the hall). Price includes all train activities, meals and beverage service (soft drinks, coffee/tea, water, beer/wine) enroute, facilities and shower in each car, two nights hotel room in Los Angeles, concerts in Los Angeles and Seattle, motorcoach transport to/from LA show. Gratuities and other transfers not included.

REGARDING ON-BOARD ACCOMMODATIONS: Train travel in the US is not without its quirks. Our cars are attached to the rear of Amtrak’s Coast Starlight, and consequently we bump up against some maximum-train-length issues. Depending on mysterious circumstances beyond mortal humans’ divining, the Railroad Gods may demand that the Salisbury Beach sleeper be attached northbound -and/or removed southbound- in Oakland. Should this happen, Salisbury Beach patrons (those purchasing Berth Space and the last few private rooms we offer) will be accommodated in public spaces in other cars for the daytime hours. For this inconvenience, those passengers will receive a $100 per person cash rebate. But it may not happen at all; one never knows.

REGARDING HOTELS: If you do not need hotel in Los Angeles on either 3/21 or 3/26, just let us know at time of sign up and we will deduct $150 ($75/night) per person from your trip. In Seattle, we provide accommodations on board the train for the two nights of 3/23 and 3/24. If you would prefer to stay in a hotel those nights, we will provide a hotel recommendation, but you must book and pay for the room(s) directly. If you wish to book additional nights in LA at our group rate either before or after the trip, please let us know at the time of booking, or by 2/20/15, and we will be happy to arrange.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for your trip. By purchasing through this link to Squaremouth (an aggregator where various insurance company policies can be compared at no additional cost to you), we receive a small commission (about five percent). This helps us keep our trips as affordable as possible.

PAYMENT

Credit cards (Visa, MC, Amex) and checks accepted. $300 per person non-refundable deposit must be paid within 7 days of sign-up in order to hold space. Payment plans at no additional charge are happily accommodated. Payment plan must be agreed upon and set up within 30 days of sign-up. 2% discount for entire payment or series of postdated checks received within ten days of sign up (offer ends 1/1/15). Payments outside of deposit, and less 3% credit card fees if applicable, are refundable until 60 days prior to event. Reservations are transferable. Liability release signature required.

Sign up today, by e-mailing Roots on the Rails at trains@sover.net, by calling 866-484-3669 (toll free in the US & Canada) or 802-258-1397.
