You may remember my friend JJ McCabe from last year’s JJ McCabe And Fallen Angel power pop masterstroke Presenting. Surely the best of the genre (just give another listen to the horns on “Gimme More” and the guitar on “Uuu”) in 2013 and well worth checking out, so I guess the two Beatles tracks aren’t a shocker at all on the . Ice JJ Fish on the other hand…
1. It’s Been A Long Long Time – Bing Crosby – With Les Paul, no less, this sounds so mister crooner I am surprised he didn’t actually singer “buhhahuhbahuh”. I am a huge fan myself (as is Elvis Costello by the way) and the PBS Special on December 2nd should help in resurrecting his spoiled image – A
2. When You’re Smiling – Louis Armstrong – Are they double tracking Armstrong here? Wouldn’t be my first choice mostly because you have to wait too long for the trumpe solo – A-
3. A Hard Day’s Night – The Beatles – Legendary malapropism from Ringi lead to the first signs of fatigue – A
4. Help – The Beatles – Take it literally, Lennon sure did, heralded the beginning of the beginning of the end and Lennon worn out completely… though we didn’t know it then – A
5. On The Floor – Ice JJ Fish – He sounds like ol’ Dirty Bastard without the rapping, all wobbly and out of tune but cool and sweet and oddly obtuse, even his dancing is weirdly off. Nice choice and new to me – B+
