Tell me why, I don’t like Sundays? For concerts, for a working stiff, it is the worst day of the week. It starts you off on Monday morning exhausted before the week starts and whenever possible I skip the day. An afternoon gig at Sumemrstage? Sure, why not? A late nighter in Williamsburg? Sorry, Prince you’re gonna have to party without me.
Which is why I won’t be making it my D’Angelo hat trick on Sunday, June 21st, despite Forest Hills Stadium being somewhat close to a perfect shed for me. Six stops from my home with a 10pm noise curfew, the oly problem with the place is the seats have no backs.
D’Angelo’s gig at the Apollo earlier this year was one for the ages, his gig at Best Buy a month or so later, wasn’t one for the ages, and this one, with gary Clark jr -the guitar superman my buddy Tomas Doncker (who is a true guitar superman) considers seriously over rated and I think is terrific live (I saw him at the Bowery Ballroom a coupla years ago, and I take it from me, this guys has hands bigger than most peoples faces) but less great on record. Indeed, he hasn’t been recorded well yet.
So figure this as an evening of neo-black blues and soul for the masses, all that’s missing is Kendrick. This is black mafia as black art.
But really, there is no one D’Angelo can out do his Apollo gig and while I wouldn’t mind seeig either guy again… on a Sunday night???
