Some twitter users and several blogs, such as the LAWeekly, became all excited at the announce of what they called an anti-Coachella: the cult Canadian Hardcore band Fucked Up has just scheduled a show at the Ace Hotel on April 15th, the same weekend than the big desert event.
The Palm Springs hotel is already the site of many pre-Coachella parties and events, as the town becomes ground zero for the festival-goers, so I am not sure whether it is really an anti-Coachella event or an extra act added to the festival.
Whatever, Fucked Up will bring what is missing to Coachella: the hardcore, the taboo and the diehard ugly.
If you are not familiar with the band’s antics, like I was, let’s say that they have made allusions to fascism and Nazi mysticism, and one of their releases in 2004 even contained a Hitler picture. At different MTV Live recordings, the moshing audience was so excited during their performance, that they caused $2000 in damages to the set the first time, whereas the band and the fans destroyed the whole thing the second time.

Frontman 300-pounds Damian Abraham regularly strips down, moons the crowd, exposes himself while doing the crucifixion pose with this famous forehead cutting… and he also has the nice habit to leap from a barricade to land at the top of people’s heads on the crowd: when you are Iggy Pop it’s doable but at his weight it’s injury-guaranty. Let’s hope this hotel has a good insurance.
Their performance at the hotel is free and they will be playing the Echoplex in Los Angeles the next day!
