Well who knows if this is the final production or a stripped down talk show version, but yep, Colin Meloy is all voice. There is a distinct sound to his nasal twang that can sometimes come across a bit to country and western. The sole acoustic guitar accompaniment could have taken this tune to the Grand Ol’ Opry but it didn’t.
Colin Meloy is the man I hate to love. I shouldn’t appreciate his whining bullshit but man oh man do I. Not so much a guilty pleasure but rather a pleasure that I find just as much confusing. He is absolutely the opposite of what I look for in music. Yet it really impacts me in a positive way. So I have stopped trying to figure out why and kicked back to simply appreciate it.
I have loved The Decemberists since first hearing them and I am thrilled to be able to see them at Boston Calling at the end of May. But I am unsure if the open air festival setting will be condusive to my mojo- I fear these Boston hipsters will kill my love of this band but meh, who knows.
As for Carolina Low the tune was supposedly written since Meloy didnt know what to perform on the talk show “ CBC Radio’s Q Live event in Portland”, but I aint buying that. “I didn’t know what to play so I thought I would write something for it,” Meloy told the audience. Yeah,.. nah.
If you can stomach the talk show host its a fun little interview but if you cant zip to 1:10 and hear the tune. This is Colin at his casual best, great song.. wonder whats next.
