Celebrate The End Of The World With The New Flaming Lips 'Sun Blows Up Today'

Technically, the sun will never explode, our star is not big enough to become a supernova, and, in about 5 billion years, it will just expand into a red giant and then collapse into white dwarf before slowly fading away… I just have to say this but it doesn’t matter as I don’t get my astronomy lesson from the Flaming Lips! The idea is, once again, that,… we are all going to die of a horrible death, and this is probably the idea behind their bleak and disturbing record upcoming record, ‘The Terror’.

The Flaming Lips have just released a non-album/bonus track, ‘Sun Blows Up Today’ and a video to go with it, and this let’s-have-a-motherfucker-party-before-we-die music is probably not exactly your idea of bleak and disturbing!

Watch at your own risk, the video is all about pulsating vocals over freak-out electronics, hypnotic swirls of synth, video-game sonic chaos over some bubbly cartoonish visuals… it could be the equivalent of a journey beyond-the-speed-of-light through a black hole interpreted by a pop-art artist on an acid trip. It’s an exuberant and ultra-colorful celebration of the apocalypse with lyrics popping up and blowing up like confetti and balloons over a kaleidoscopic dizziness-induced vision of the Armageddon.

They sure didn’t put any effort in the lyrics but what else is left to say when it is the end of the solar system? Plus there was no need to be deep as the song is gonna be featured in a Hyundai commercial, featuring the Lips themselves, which will air during the Superbowl on February 3rd,.. so I will have a good reason for watching beside spying on Beyonce’s next lip-syncing.

The Flaming Lips have also confirmed a few tour dates, so far nothing in Los Angeles!
