The time has come to celebrate the place where legends were born and the image of filthy punk club was elevated to unimaginable levels. The infamous CBGB’s was the Vatican of punkers and I should know. As a young whippersnapper it was a pilgrimage that was made nearly weekly. Sneaking out bedroom windows and outright plotting lies to my parents got me a ring side seat to the punk movements evolution. Some of the best of days and the worse of days thats for sure.
But, the club is gone and the urban legend lives. For every mass produced t-shirt there is a poser saying they were there. But now you can say you were at the Fest! A fantastic week of events from movies to speakers to free concerts in Times Square. You can be cool if you werent at the original club and if you’re old enough to have been a player in the day- well you can be smug and know it all to the whipper snappers! Win/Win!
Lets face it there aint much old school punk left BUT celebrate diversity?
Appearing wil be My Morning Jacket, The Wallflowers and Grizzly Bear are on the bill. Divine Fits will perform at the concert in Times Square Oct. 12. Plus, and ‘gasp’ a special DJ set from former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy.
The festivities features more than 700 live events including more than 500 artists at more than 175 venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan, more than 125 speakers and 100 films.
Time Square will also offer fans interactive installations like a music equipment expo, a skateboard half-pipe, rock climbing, a record fair, a silent disco and more. What the hell does a silent disco have to do with this? Rock Climbing? Its a wonderland!
