I love my bands’ t-shirts like any of you, I have a lot of them and they represent what I like or even love. But I draw a line somewhere, I am not going to pay more than $20-25 for a shirt! However, lots of people are ready to go way over this line, and the blog CherryBombed has a surprising list of really really overpriced vintage t-shirts.
You want a 1998 Slayer ‘World Sacrifice’ shirt? You will just have to spend $1,000 on Etsy. An Iron Maiden’s commemorative t-shirt for their 1982 show at the Palladium in New York? It could have been yours for just $1,200 on Ebay,… note that the shirt was sold last July, and that’s pretty incredible to me. Don’t worry, you may find other ones, in a click, I found this Guns N’ Roses one at $999.99 or this Sex Pistols at $900!
Are people out of their mind? I don’t care how rare your shirt is, I don’t care how much you may love the band, these prices are simply insane and people on Ebay or Etsy should have a reality check!
But going back to Cherry Bombed, they may have found the one that beats all the other ones, a Run DMC shirt sold on Defunkd Vintage T-shirt Collective! Actually, this Defunkd site is heaven for bored people with-too-much-money-to-spend-on-memorabilia, as they have a lot of t-shirts sold for $1,000, they even have a Runaways shirt at $7,500, a Johnny Thunders at $4,599, a weird Rolling Stones 1976 tour at $9,235, and should I continue? The Run DMC shirt is at $13,000, just pocket money really, and the shipping is not even included! What a joke. This is the description provided by the site:
‘This RUN DMC Adidas combo relic has been making headlines for years. It was originally offered for sale in the early 2000s on another system – we acquired it secretly in 2011 in order to carry on its exorbitant pricing tradition. It also holds the honor of being the first t-shirt listed for sale on the Defunkd Collective.’
Secretly acquired? What is this, the t-shirt mafia? I don’t want to give people bad ideas, but all these designs can be easily ‘stolen’ from the site and reproduced with a simple transfer, I have made cool t-shirts to myself using $5 plain white t-shirts! The DIY way, because honestly, there is nothing punk about a $1,000 Sex Pistols shirt.
