Casey Kasem and the Top Forty

Keep takin’ dem scooby snacks, Casey
I am dangerously out of touch with popular music. I have no idea what the number 1 song is. I have no idea who the most popular tour is. I know what I read here but I do not listen to top 40 radio nor does anyone in my social circle. Most old folks like me keep hip from listening to their kids but I don’t even have that as mine is just as left of the dial, if not more so, than I am.

I do recall years gone by listening to Casey Kasems countdown. I recall clearly taking turns with my older sister singing into the hair brush alternating hits. I can remember the year end countdown and that drum roll for the……..number………..one ……………song of the year…………..IS!

Hes still alive Casey is 77 and happily retired fromcounting them down as of July 4 2009. No more offering those ‘long distance dedications’ Remember those?

Dear Casey, I met a guy in a line while waiting to pick up my leisure suit at the cleaners. We got to talking about our mutual love for KC and the Sunshine Band. The line was long as as we passed the time our similarities grew. How I wish I had given him my number. Can you please dedicate, ”Get Down Tonight’ to my laundry love? God Bless, Sudsy in Sacramento…

YEAH remember that??

Music has spread in so many directions now that I dont even know what genre is top.

For a brief moment this morning that bothered me. I felt absolutely out of touch. I stopped listening to top 40 radio in about 1980. Thats 29 years of out of touch.

So I googled Americas Top 40 and came up with AT40.com

There in front of me is Ryan Seacrest? The number 1 song Poker Face? WTF?

Thinking i have a past list I refresh the page go to the home page, search THIS week.. same

hmmm All American Rejects “Gives you Hell” is number 2? Are you freakin kidding these are far from new. On this site I also find that Eminem is the artist of the decade…….now I’m really confused. Check it out. Its the cheesiest low budget site Ive seen in awhile and is in no way Casey worthy. You think Alt Press has a lame site check out this dog.

Billboard has stuff Ive never head of anywhere but here and actually has an interesting mix of performers I have heard of but …. I want Americas Top Forty back not this crap. But as I click around again I’m faced with which ‘top 10’ list I want to see the radio, pop, country….

I can have the number one hit song on my street and have it posted. Could it be that there are so many option now there is no real number 1? Its like when they gave out awards in kindergarten, not wanting to hurt any kid someone got best eraser clapper.

I celebrate the diversity but it sure makes it tough to learn all the words- so much for hairbrush singing
