Artists Vs Poets EP Review: “Turning twenty-one is a bitch to go through” by Mary Magpie

blowin’ bubbles in the air
As a fan of the early Artist Vs Poet, I happily purchased the new EP from them, “Damn Rough Night”. The opening song and the title track, “Damn Rough Night”, is about the hardships of growing older and how “Turning twenty one is a bitch to go through” in addition to “I guess I had a damn rough night, I’m still piecing it together, there’s a girl in my bedding and I haven’t even met her.” Undoubtedly, these alt-obsessed teenagers that I fell in love with are going through some tough things themselves. Watching a band grow up like this is not only surprising but nice to see that they aren’t just kids making guitar riffs and choruses in their bedrooms.

The second song, “Gateway”, brings back so many memories of the first AVP EP so strongly that it brings me back to their show at the Webster. Incredibly enough, in this song they go back to the same techno-kissed pop sound that I fell in love with. It shows that no matter how big you get, your sound never changes completely.

“Rescue” opens up with a guitar riff followed by clean, flawless vocals. As soon as you think that the chorus is going to be filled with a techno beat and fast vocals, they bring it to what some may consider a bit of a “breakdown”. A risk, but it’s not surprising that they do it without any questions asked.

The last track, “To Hell With the Letdown”, is a song that I’ve been quite obsessed with. There is something that I can’t put my finger on, but it draws me in and causes me to be listening to this song over and over again.

AVP has that one element to them that no one really can describe. A type of uniqueness that is unmistakable. Their lyrics, their positivity, and their humbleness are things to admire. They sure as hell don’t let me down.
