Candy Hearts is one of the best bands names I have heard in a very long time. This trio released their first single and LP and in doing so made their family and friends really proud.
The problem here is that Avril Lavigne was nearly 20 years ago and that school girl voice really has been done before. The shouting of “I Miss You” is the perfect lyric for the high school sophomore genre this band slot in to. There lies the problem. In an over saturated teen pop punk market, is there room for a cutie pie band?
Well, yes. This song aside from the vocals is not only well constructed but fabulously executed. If the vocals were just s tad less shrill there was a chance I would be calling this song excellent- instead it’s just OK. Vocalist Mariel Loveland chanels her inner Avril ala Hayley when she should really be exploring her own sound. The clarity is there its just spent too much time singin Sk8r Boy.
But alas, this is what comes with musical maturity, the discovery of ones self. That being said Candy Hearts arent bad, theyre actually pretty good as a cover band. I simply cannot encourage people with actual talent by praising them for mimicking other groups.
So lets hope that “I Miss You” was nothing more than a poor decision as first single. My hope is the upcoming album “All The Ways You Let Me Down”, due out June 10th, shows us who they really are.
