On January 9 th 2015, Billy Joel will play the THIRTENTH night in his once a month residency at Madison Square Garden. How big are these concerts for Cablevision? Huge, it saved the Arena in 2014. Making up for the three sports teams (Liberty, Knicks and rangers) complete inability to make the play offs, it sould out the joint at top end prices (a hundred bucks for nosebleeds) so they are undoubtedly overjoyed that Billy isn’t calling it quite yet.
So far, Billy has played for 156,000 people, at an average of $150 a head… well, you can add it up as well as I can. A terrific concept which must keep it fresh for Billy as well.
The show I saw in October was awesome (my review) here, a good rebound from the lousy New Years Eve 2013 gig: “Completely unlike Elton John, who pounds you into submission, or Springsteen, who just won’t stop, Joel is happy to hang with you, do what he does in the firm knowledge you are going to enjoy it and for a couple of hours he is going to be not Mussolini but a King Henry V type figure. He simply rules.”
I would love it if Billy performs years of one night concerts, it is such a great idea, he is so good and as we speak I am thinking I’m gonna try and catch him on… THE SECOND SATURDAY IN 2015…
