Be Here Now: First Takes On New Album Releases 9-2-14

Gordon Grey's A;lum Of The week

Gordon Grey’s Album Of The week

Barragan – Blonde Redhead -These guys are No Wave adherents who’ve been around for years and have let their populist side out on this subtle and quiet quasi ambient music. Produced by Drew Brown (who has worked with Beck and Radiohead), you might define it as acceptable weirdness – B-

Strange EP – Charlotte O.C. Strange Records hope lightning strikes twice with this UK Lana Del Rey similar alike, Charlotte rocks harder but she works a similar depressive mode. The songs need to be a little stronger at this point – B-

Opening – Christopher Willitts – This is as close to ambient as ambient gets in 2014, the San Fran multi-media artists plays with synths for a background of mood enhancers. So if that’s your thing… Grade: C+

I Am King – Code Orange – It has the sludgy sound of post-grunge late 1990s hard rock, and it is a quicksand sound which punishes you with its death grindiness; it doesn’t stick but it does claw –  B

Somewhere Under Wonderland – Counting Crows – whatever you might want to say about this album, and I’ve always had my doubts about Counting Crows, give em this: the quality of songwriting as Counting Crows songwriting, is first rate. But, man, what a caveat – C+

Soft Friday – Coves – UK duo who sound like the Kills with all the blues drained out and replaced by melodic hard rock – B

Forget I Brought It Up – Grey Gordon – If your thing is pop-punk I may well have the album of the year for you. This Fort Wayne, Indiana native has pulled off a melodic hard rocking fuzz from time to time, on the money always. The first song, “Barstools And Haricuts” sets the tone, nice back beat for a song you are whistling before it’s over -ALBUM OF THE WEEK – B+

Overjoyed – Half Japanese – “Overjoyed” is such a joyful noise  and the album’s theme “”Pretty good , pretty great,  two thumbs up, first rate” is reinforced and what  a great theme it is from the punk survivor Jad Fair. This is the sort of album that can turn your dark mood into a sorta inner glow – B+

Seen it All: The Autobiography – Jeezy – Atlanta based rapper been around since 05 and he sounds exactly EXACTLY the way you think he does. It isn’t bad gangsta and back beat, the man has a great voice, but cmon it has been decades of glocks and gash – C+

The Ride – Lily Taylor – a neat trick here: drone pop with a better than average voice via Dallas – B

V – Maroon 5 – It’s not that I liked “Move Like A Jagger” but at least it was a big big song, and while  V is more of the bands pop plus falsetto, it lacks that one big song to push it over the top. Like the man said: go big or go home – B-

After The End – Merchandise – First rate indie rock with one good song after another. It could break em big – B+

Nick & Knight – Nick & Knight – Again, do you grade it on what it is or do you grade it on what you want to listen t?. Could bring the BSB and NKOTB fans back for another listen a they tap those two bands plus NSYNC – C+

Clearing The Path To Ascend – YOB – Death metal with long quiet interludes and sound eruptions – B
