Bastille is one of those ‘indie’ bands who aren’t indie anymore but carry with them the image of flannel stubble chic. They’re pretty much everything that I hate- and I love them. Crazy isn’t it. Proving that you can be the cliche’ of cliche’ and still get to me if give in the right cosmic flux!
Here for BBC Radio 1, the band does a mash up ( so to speak) of Michael Jackson’s Earth song and one of the coolest tunes of all time Pulps “Common People”. Although the depths of accent gets in the way at times and the female ‘ahhh’ backing is often far too over bearing the stripped down versions merge beautifully and vocalist is just lovely. Dan Smith often reminds me of Snow Patrol but hey, its the accent.
In my review there is only one thing that would make this song better and that would be to rid it of the backing vocals and by looking at the YouTube comments I’m not the only one to think so.
The band is no longer indie as I mentioned before. The kiss of conformity being allowing yourself to guest on Saturday Night Live, and I am not sure if that was the right move for them. I tend to think they would have been better off in their quiet nitch. The quest for success has watered down many an act and I fear Bastille will face that fate.
For now we do get a lovely song and if you can get past the lady parts– you’ll be just fine.
