I love Alternative Press. Although not as much as avid reader as I was in days gone by I completely respect their work. Their demographic is your average 13-20 year old with a black eyeliner and a flannel shirt. Its a great way to discover new bands and they are fair, unbiased and extremely supportive of ‘the scene’. Unlike blogs or worse those fake blogs with giant corporate sponsors this Cleveland Ohio based rag is what others should be…fair. Right down to subscription prices fair for a shop clerks income.
That being said Scott Heisel, a writer I am unfamiliar with but together these 10 commandments of show going and despite some laughable comments (“I’ve actively attended shows for the past 17 years of my life, and I’ve averaged seeing 120 shows a year for the past decade”) there are some pretty solid suggestions.
Some are not so solid. I see no need to tip the merch dude who takes 20 min to throw me a t-shirt while staring down the boobs of a 14 year old girl. I will tip a merch person who actually provides customer service, the rest can piss off.
I agree in respecting the venue, and security (unless they’re blow hard goons and in 17 years of concert going I’m sure Scott knows what I mean) and for the life of me I have never heard anyone scream ‘freebird’ at a show, thought that old joke was dead?
As for ‘too cool for school’ if you’re pretending you’re in the band next to me expect some sass if not a shove to the ribs. Shut up and let the band do their thing I didn’t drop $50 to hear your ass bark out misheard lyrics.
Other than that– we’re all square yo.
