In 2011, Japan had an earthquake and a meltdown, and in 2011 Aerosmith travelled to Japan, where the band is the biggest rock around, to “Rock The Rising Sun” out of their radioactive blues. If you were am Aerosmith fan, I have no doubt the end result of that trip, this 90 minute DVD I see before me, will wow Tyler and Perry fans everywhere (of which there are many) but I am the chick who walked out on Aerosmith concerts not once but both times I went to see them.
So musically, the drum solo had me covering my eyes, the sight of Steve had me covering eyes and most everything else had me covering my ears. Well, except “Toys” maybe.
But having said that, the movie intercuts scenes of overjoyed friends with Steve at Disneyland Tokyo, Joe buying rare knives, the band meeting with friends, and everybody everywhere shouting the bands praise. If memory serves, only Cyndi Lauper and Aerosmith went to visit at that time so good for them.
The band are good humored and friendly and a superfans comment that it is still the same members in the band as it was 40 years ago should be remembered and appreciated. They hang out, hug fans, hug each other and have such consistent friendliness to each other that it can’t ALL be feigned. It is a little sad watching these 60 something year old men in leather pants and shawls and long lacy scarves and horrible hair. And those songs are such overblown dross it is really hard to enjoy the show even while you kind of enjoy their company.
Grade if you’re an Aerosmith fan: B+
Grade if you’re me: C
