I have never been that interested by Metallica, but the recent news about people wanting them to be removed from the Glastonbury festival line-up got me intrigued… why do people start a petition against a festival headliner? Very simple and horrific, I checked the petition web page to read this:
‘Remove Metallica from the festival line up. Due to James Hetfields vile obsession with Bear Hunting’
Bear hunting? Yes, not only is Metallica frontman James Hetfield a member of the NRA, but he is also an absolutely disgusting hunter enthusiast. On top of this, he has made the decision to narrate a new TV series about Alaskan bear hunting, which obviously didn’t please a lot of people.
‘This page is an appeal to Glastonbury to remove Metallica from their lineup. We believe James Hetfield’s support of big-game hunting is incompatible with the spirit of Glastonbury and brings its good name into disrepute’ wrote a goup administrator, ‘I doubt very much that James Hetfield is the first high-profile big-game hunter to grace the stages — I’m sure there have been many, I do, however, doubt that any of them have had a prime time History show promoting his view that hunting is a good thing to do, on at the same time. This double exposure gives his views extra publicity and acceptability, and this is where we can have an effect… This is about raising awareness and making both Metallica and Glastonbury aware of what appears to be a large number of people’s disapproval.’
According to the Guardian, Hetfield is gonna narrate eight episodes of ‘The Hunt’, which premieres on June 8th on the History Channel, and the series follows a group of hunters as they pursue the world’s largest brown bears in Alaska. This is some really disturbing programming, which can only remind me this other series about Sarah Palin and her obsession for moose hunting on the Sportsman Channel. Not that I did watch this carnage-enthusiasm crazy woman’s show, but unsurprisingly the bear hunting is happening in her state, Alaska.
However, this protest also raises the question,… where do we draw the line when it comes to entertainers and musicians? None of them can possibly have ideas and occupations that can please everyone. When it comes to hunting, Country stars are big on the occupation, a country festival could be Morrissey’s biggest nightmare as Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, John Michael Montgomery, George Strait, Hank Williams Jr., Kix Brooks, Travis Tritt, Tracy Lawrence, Tracy Byrd, Rhett Akins,… have all admitted to be deer or turkey hunters. Plus, there are the Ted Nugent or Kid Rock of this world, both avid hunters and proud to be, and some less obvious ones such as Brian Ferry, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Roger Daltrey, Mike Rutherford who support fox hunting, and have played a gig in 2006 to support Countryside Alliance in its fight to lift the ban on fox hunting in the UK… such a disappointment! Thus no festival headlining for any of them?
Well there are also the fur and shoes-made-with-animal-skin wearers, I personally think Beyonce’s PMK sneakers made of stingray, ostrich, crocodile and anaconda skins, her Superbowl bodysuit made of iguana and python skins, and her husband Jay Z’ s PMK sneakers made from ten animal skins, including elephant (elephants, the most amazing animal living on this planet!!) is a good reason for preventing them from headlining any festival – except that they own their personal festivals… Still we can easily boycott this Made in America thing.
I always attack these two, but the list is endless, Lady Gaga has defended wearing furs, and meat, Kanye West thinks he can wear fur because he is a rock star or something like this, Rihanna, P. Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle and Courtney Love are all fur-whores, Justin Bieber adopted then abandoned an exotic monkey and U2’s The Edge has been trying to destroy Malibu ecology. There are not a lot of people left at the end!
Still it doesn’t mean we should not protest against rock stars’ unethical behavior, no, they can’t do whatever they want because they are precisely rock stars. I never understood why some humans find pleasure at shooting beautiful animals and destroying their families, it makes me physically sick. Bear hunting is a terrible hobby, like any animal killing, it’s cruel, so unnecessary and especially unfair… this is not a sport, this is murder, and this is not even a meat-is-murder kind of thing, because bear hunters don’t eat bears. So sign the petition!
