Spotify's Ten Most Streamed Songs In 2012

This just-published list of the most streamed songs on Spotify is just so boringly predictable! Why are people so unadventurous and accept to be spoon-fed/brainwashed by media going on repeat with the same top ten songs for months? This list just confirms people’s sheep behavior, Spotify gives them the choice to listen to anything they want, anything that is on their huge library, and what do they do? They pick the songs that they can listen to on ANY popular radio stations right now, which makes Spotify so useless at the end.

And just don’t tell me that people listen to these songs because they are the best ones of the moment! Rock NYC has a column about ‘The Essential Songs’ of a particular year of the past decades, but do you really think that Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ will be featured in the essential songs of 2012 in 30 years from now? Actually the song is from 2011 and I can’t believe people are still listening to this boring-somnambulistic tune a year after, aren’t they over it already?

I don’t even want to mention the Nicki Minaj’s Budweiser-beach commercial, which sounds like the boy bands’ songs, the Wanted or One Direction are simply more girlie than Nicki, whereas that Flo Rida’s one is just one too many crappy tunes on that list.

Fun. has not one but two songs, and honestly ‘Some nights’ sounds like Titus Andronicus re-interpreted by Celine Dion, whereas ‘We Are Young’ is a recipe for a hit as it appears to be a dozen of other well-known songs in one, a sort of condensed soup of Thompson Twins, Erasure, Queen, ABBA,..

The auto-tuned Maroon 5’s song is greatly forgettable as everything they do and the Carly Rae Jepsen’s tube of the year is as annoying as the number of times she repeats ‘call me may be’… and so we are left with number 8, M83’s ‘Midnight City’, which may be the most interesting one on the list by far.

Here are Spotify ten most-streamed songs in 2012:

10. Nicki Minaj – “Starships”
9. The Wanted – “Glad You Came”
8. M83 – “Midnight City”
7. Flo Rida featuring Sia – “Wild Ones”
6. One Direction – “What Makes You Beautiful”
5. Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa – “Payphone”
4. Fun. – “Some Nights”
3. Carly Rae Jepsen – “Call Me Maybe”
2. Fun. featuring Janelle Monae – “We Are Young”
1. Gotye featuring Kimbra – “Somebody That I Used To Know”
