“Solitary Drinking”, “I Hope You Dance”, “I’ll Think Of A Reason Later” –three great Lee Ann Womack songs right off the top of my head, though really, just about anything from last year’s The Way I’m Livin’ will do just fine from this wonderful country singer, will be joined by Amanda Shire, who plays a mean fiddle and whose 2013 Down Fell The Doves, is pretty good… not to mention Amanda’s work with her husband Jason Isbell, at City Winery on Monday.
Tuesday – Crowder – Best Buy – My opinion of CCM is well documented but there are exceptions and David Crowder sure is one of them –a truly weird pop dance, rock, soft hard, loud, soft Christian with conviction to burn. Did I like Neon Steeple? Compared to what? Hillsongs? Sure, I do.
Thursday – Gilberto Gil – Town Hall – King of the Samba
Thursday – John Mellencamp – Apollo Theatre – never much of a fan but it is hard to kick against the excellent Plain Spoken from last year.
Thursday – Manic Street Preachers – Webster Hall – Playing one of my favorite albums, The Holy Bible. No Richie ain’t there, but that ain’t their fault.
Thursday – Agnostic Front – The Bowery Electric – Original New York hardcore, gets no better, gets no worse…
Friday – Keith Sweat – Bb Kings – Terrific soul man from the 90s and still going strong.
Friday – Hurray For The Riff Raff – Bowery Ballroom – When I saw this neo-folkie last year i was overawed, surprised as well. Great live.
Friday – Randy Bachman – The Concert Hall – The Concert Hall is where oldtimers go for another shot at respectability… and when your last album was called Takin’ Care Of Christmas, respectability is what you need most.
