Peter Gabriel’s ‘White Shadow’

Reify is a New York company which has found a way to transform songs into 3-D sculptures! They promise to have created a ‘cross-sensory experiences of sound’, and since 3D printing is all the rage now, these sculptures are not simply computerized images but can actually be printed.

If I am not sure to understand how they do this, their pages on Tumblr or Facebook, show a few interesting examples. This twisted licorice is the War on Drugs’ ‘Suffering’, this waffle-like structure (although it is very hard to describe these things) is the Velvet Underground’s ‘Venus in Furs’, this ghostly Chinese lantern is Kate Bush’s ‘The Dreaming’, this rattan-like table is Martha & the Vandellas’ ‘Dancin’ in the Street’, this fluffy arabesque is Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘Spin Spin’, this unfinished and asymmetrical white growth is Nick Drake’s ‘From the Morning’, this blue (and not purple?) folded drapery is Prince’s ‘Until I find the righteous One’, and the one you see at the top of this post is Peter Gabriel’s ‘White Shadow’…

And the beauty of all this is that Reify is also developing a software that will allow you to scan these sculptures with your cell phone to interpret them back in audio files and listen to the songs. They have posted a video, which without revealing anything of the technology behind all this (not that I would understand) exposes the principle.

Reify is a ‘collective of visual artists, musicians, designers & technologists who are driven by a shared curiosity in the interplay of form and meaning — a digital synesthesia’…what a cool way to make a living!
