The Blur by numbers continues apace, and “Lonesome Street” is the third in a row from the eagerly. in some quarters, awaited first album in 12 years The Magic Whip, has so far split down the middle. “Go Out” a goodie with a very catchy chorus and a singalong attitude even if it doesn’t entirely lend itself and “There Are Too Many Of Us”a dreary somewhere in the middle of it all slog through overpopulation and now here is # 3, which exists somewhere in the middle. Off melody, woozy, staggered track which reformats itself for a fun outro. It is pretty good indeed.
Though the question remains, what happened to Albarn’s songwriting skills, why is he incapable of a “Parklife”. “End Of The Century”, “Country House”… why does he misinterprets the skills necessary to write great pop songs and so fosters arty crappola on us like the entire world can’t pay attention to a song performed straight.
“Lonesome Street” is a borderline goodie. “What have you got? Mass produced in somewhere hot…?” The arrangement is way too clever dickie for my taste but it sure does have a way about it, the wooo ooohs are a pleasure.
The last of the three songs, so let’s take a look…
