No, I’m not crazy about “Fourfiveseconds”, it’s pleasant, sweet both Rihanna and Yeezus do a pretty ace vocal and the song is fine but minor. It isn’t quite good enough. Is it nearly good enough? Yeah, sure, nearly good enough, but it is missing that extra kick., it is all minor chords and minor concepts with a cast of thousands having their hand in it. Compare it to, say, “We Found Love”, a minor key major triumph for Rihanna, and which “Fourfiveseconds” is absolutely channeling, and the new one is whatever. It is like “We Found Love” only the song isn’t as good and the arrangement is much worse.
Still, it is very satisfying to watch an ex-Beatle standing at the apex of pop music in 2015. You can’t go much higher than this and he handles himself with a sort of restrained dignity that makes all pleasures seem more in keeping for all of us. Age becomes McCartney, he is so smart, smart enough to know where he belongs and where he belongs is amongst the 20s and 30 somethings who are smart enough to know how much they owe him. Kanye is on the wrong side of 30 and has never been a dumbass when it comes to music (it is everything else he is stupid at)
So, finally, here is the video for “ 4/5” and it is an understated charmer which one day will be looked back on with a great deal of affection and till then won’t be. Enjoy.
