Well, finally! Elton announced he is closing the door on his career and I could not be happier with the news. “No more shows, no more music, no more songs,” Elton John declared on stage, according to the French regional newspaper L’Indépendant.
Let’s just hope he means it this time. Lets roll this back shall we. I would consider myself an Elton John fan for everything pre “Im Still Standing” with the ‘yea yea yea’s’ he lost me and became a joke. It’s almost when he decided to become a flamboyant queen that he lost his cool- we always knew he was a flamboyant queen so the grandstanding wasnt needed. He lost his air of creative eccentricity and became just an old creepy club guy. Married or not- kid or not.. he became a stereotypical parody. (We wont even go in to the horrific SNL hosting bit..help us we’re still trying to recover from that)
But John was truly Captain Fantastic. Such legendary tunes so heartfelt and true. From Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, to Caribou his albums offered up unique sounds and really quote worthy lyrics
The 67-year-old, who has sold nearly 250 million albums worldwide during his career of over 40 years has claimed it was the end in the past. We have to hope this time he means it. I do believe he has a couple kids now and maybe he wants to go hula hoop with them or some other ‘need time with my family’ cliche’ or maybe he realizes his time is done. When rocknyc last saw him live he was a bore- hes old, hes lost the schtick- he lost the costumes.. hes just another old guy playing 30 year old songs.
For his own dignity and the preservation of fond memories lets hope this time is for real. Enjoy the retirement EJ and thanks for the memories.
