The Front Bottoms "Twelve Feet Deep" Track Reviewed

Front Bottoms

The Front Bottoms released a new version of “Twelve Feet Deep”, but it keeps on being advertised as a new song.  However, it’s pretty obscure and not as well known as their other work, so it’s an easy mistake to make.  I love the remake so much.  It feels really expansive and beautiful, and it feels like it would fit on their self-titled.

Brian Sella’s vocals are stunning.  They are smooth and perfect, fitting over the dancey music with ease.  If you listen to the original, it seems like the first is just a lame cover of this version.  I loved the original for such a long time, but that was only because it was all I knew.  They not only completely revamped the tune and made it a thousand times better, but it’s more complex and still feels raw, just more like the musicians are experienced.  The transition is so obvious, it’s like night and day.
The lyrics are undoubtedly adolescent feeling, expressing college struggles and telling the tale of a love struck and confused Brian.  They’re now layered on top of warm and well produced instruments, a far better fit than before.  It feels like a new TFB song, something they could’ve just written and released yesterday, and it’s that feeling that I love.  I pray that they perform it live on their upcoming tour, because it’s definitely their best release to date.  To be able to take a relatively previously mediocre song and make it this impressive is talent that cannot be overlooked.
