Two Humans, my own personal hometown heroes, have unleashed unfortunate news that they’re splitting. However, not all is doom and gloom in the CT music scene because they released one last album- “Institute Of Living”. It’s an absolute masterpiece that’s the soundtrack of spring and summer, and a fantastic way to end a phenomenal career.
Opening with “Head” and flowing seamlessly into “Body”, Jason Rule’s voice cuts through it all to instantly draw in the listener. I adore how these two songs connect- it’s so well done. Jason’s voice is better than ever, strong and passionate, and he’s forever one of my favorite vocalists. When it shifts from a slow ballad to an upbeat fast paced punk tune, it’s impossible to not get up and dance. It’s amazing to me how these three guys can create such a massive sound. It’s a good indication of how much they’ve grown over the years, because the complexity of all the instruments in this song combo is super impressive.
“Bruce Museum” is a song they’d played live before releasing the record. The line “be free, and be sad, and tell your best friends that they make you fuckin’ mad” has been ringing through the ears of us all ever since they first performed it. I can’t get enough of this song, and it’s probably my favorite on the album. The drums are fantastic, driving the song and keeping you on your toes.
I keep catching myself singing the tune, “Free Refills”. It’s composed so well and I got goosebumps when I first heard it. The shift in dynamic throughout the song is perfect. I really wanna see them perform this one live, before they finally split for good. “And I got a letter from mommy, she said ‘Jason, it is time you grew up.’ (but I don’t wanna!) I’m still drinkin’ at the hotel lobby and writin’ that I don’t give a fuck…I DON’T GIVE A FUCK” would be an awesome lyric to experience in person.
Two Humans’ leave is bittersweet, but I’m damn glad they left us with the best album of 2014 to remember them by. Here.
