Arcade Fire covers Prince’s “Controversy”

Arcade Fire

The album Controversy is one of my all time faves.  Prince looking so young and lame with that crazy keyboard action- it brought me great job back in day.  The entire 1981 offering is squeel worthy- with really strong beats and  (this is the kicker) intelligent lyrics.  Prince is legend and decades later some idiots have taken this tune and diluted it beyond hope.

Win Butlers vocals make my skin crawl.  Its as if he has trouble stayin on key.  Musically I will concede that its alright- maybe the bongo’s are a bit strong (and I swear trotting horse like at times) but its the vocals… that are so bad that I cringe.

Apparently this recording was done the opening night of their Reflektor tour and Butler sported a cubed Prince head.  Which is even more idiotic.  Arcade Fire is a band I cannot appreciate.  There are acts that I feel just as much angst toward that have in some way redeemed themselves by a well placed cover.  If you can pull off a tune as well as or at least as interesting as the original Im going to forgive a whole lot of other work.

Butler and his Brillo mate have pushed my hatred to a new level with this tune.  Void of any power, bland and mundane I presume this is the artsy version of a funk tune- but to me it is pure trash.  I can now say that there really is no redemption for these people.  Carry on.

While on the topic of Controversy, anyone remember the tune “Ronnie Talk To Rusia’?  Now THERE is a song worth updating.
