Listen to Bosco Delrey's New Song ‘Egyptian Holed Up’

Bosco Delrey

I just remembered about Bosco Delrey, he had released an album in 2011, ‘Everybody Wah’, that I used to listen to,… it was good, very retro and original sounding at the same time, a bit of rockabilly, half Hanni El Khatib’s love for leatherjackets, half Beck’s easiness for weird and experimental pop. Plus Bosco Delrey was first to write a song entitled ‘Afterlife’ (on this same album), did you hear this Arcade Fire?

So I was wondering what happened to him, and it seems he will be back soon, as he has shared on Vimeo ‘Egyptian Holed Up’, the first song from his upcoming album, entitled ‘The Green Tiger’s Alibi’, recorded in France this summer. The song is curious, very upbeat and so retro-sounding with this early 60s (even 50s) tempo it took me some time to get used to it. It’s a bit outdated, a bit too-cool-for-radio, a bit reminiscent of what El Khatib does when he is not too rock-bluesy – I am thinking about his song ‘Penny’? ‘Egyptian Holed Up’ sounds very pre-rock’ n’ roll – and the black and white picture, which looks like the cover of an old LIFE magazine, just seems to reinforce this – but at the end it’s catchy-poppy even doo-wop-y.

Bosco Delrey is currently touring in Europe where he is enjoying a real success, and in a recent interview, he admitted he wanted to forget about his American or electronic roots and go for a more naked music with real instruments. Curiously, he is on Diplo’s Mad Decent dance label, so he is taking a direction that brings him even further apart from his labelmates, but this has never been a problem for the genre-bending type of guy he is.

Furthermore, he was chosen by Terrence Malik (‘Tree of Life’) to compose the soundtrack of his next movie (work title ‘Lawless’) so we should hear about him very soon
