I have been listening to the new Linda Thompson It Won’t be Long Now with a mix of reverance and desire and devour. It is a superb album and I will get around to reviewing it when I have listened to it more. But till then, who is that on the first song “Love Is for Babies And Fools”?
Yes, folks, it is her ex-husband the great Richard Thompson who reached the very heights of his profession with Linda on the mythic Shoot Out The Lights and then had an acrimonious break up while on the road in the US, never to get together again except her eon a sad sweet and quite quite accurate Linda composition.
Written for a guy we here at rock nyc are familiar with, Rufus Wainwright, it parries axioms like “if you scratch a lover you’ll surely find a foe”, which, really, you wanna tattoo on your wrist. Even the title has a wistful sense of hard earned lessons learned and there is always that in Linda, certainly nobody does wistful like the great singer.
Incidentally, there is a Kate McGarrigle song a little further along, oh and the fabulous “Never A bride” is awaiting your listening pleasure. This is the best folk album since Laura Marling’s Once I Was An Eagle.
Try the song yourself and smile ruefully
