Danny Brown, Frank Ocean, Slaughterhouse, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Kanye West, Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Drake, Public Enemy, Mellowhype, A$AP Ferg… the kist list of rappers who didn’t release much or any new material in 2014 is endless and relentless. It is easy to see who did.
The Slim Shady VÂ was pretty good, Iggy Azalea and Azalea Banks were both real good… Run The Jewels 2 was best in class and what else? In 2014 the nominess for best rap album were:
Drake – Nothing Was the Same
Jay-Z – Magna Carta Holy Grail
Kendrick Lamar – Good Kid, M.A.A.D City
Kanye West – Yeezus
Makclemore and Lewis – The Heist
in 2015?
Iggy Azalea – The New Classic
Common – Nobody’s Smiling
Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP 2
Childish Gambino – Because the Internet
Wiz Khalifa – Blacc Hollywood
Schoolboy Q – Oxymoron
With all due respect, Schoolboy Q is to Danny Brown what, well, what Schooboy Q is to Danny Brown. Perhaps it is an anomalie. Perhaops the world of rap took the year off. I saw three very big rap shows, Drake, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Beyonce -only Drake/Weezy were great but they were all big big big time stuff. Danny Brown was an absolute blast at Best Buy.
But there wasn’t anything close to a new Lamar, nothing really shook the world of rap at all, it was very lethargic, very underground rumblings of art and over head circling big records for 2014. A hugel disappointing year for rap.
