– Cold Stares (feat Chance The Rapper And Maceo Haymes ) – Nosaj Thing – Knockout modern blues song full of trepidation and moment, it stifles its own power in a throbbing discretion of sound; the vocal is lovely and the concerns are threatening: it is like Chance is nervous and upset – A
– Digging For Something – Superchunk – We are in Mac mood here and this remains his best song, a whirligig of youth and desire, best line is where he can’t dance this close but is willing to try – A
– Mystery Flu – Mac McCaughan – This works as uber-pop highly arranged pop art – B+
– She Stays With Me – Van Hunt – Everything is doctored here, the voice has a slight echo and the falsetto is just waitting to underline anything else. Difficult, broody, strange but his problem is his voice… – B+
– Before The Dawn – Jacco Gardner – At eight minutes this is the mid album statement, and it takes a minute for the thing to kick in and then you wish it hadn’t – C-
– Coming Over To My Place – Palma Violets – Looking for a way into the album? This sex song might do it – B
Hear Your Voice – The Young Novelist – Another break up, aided by harmonies, and nice tempo smartness… like Jackson Browne without sounding like him – B+
– Youth – Pale Honey – Great beat, fuzzy tone, aggressively neutral singing – B+
– Sprinter – Torres – Spooked by its own shadow, this is a big goth ballad – C+
– 5:15 – The Who – I’ve never really bought big bang Who, with exceptions. This is a huge one, their best song not on Meaty, Beaty, Biggie And Bouncy – A+
