– Under You – Willis Earl Beal – We all make mistakes and I make my biggest around 9am on Friday mornings after spending hour upon hour absorbing and reviewing new releases. I think my ears sometimes go wonky and that is definitely the case with this guy who I dubbed a “black Scott Walker” last night, which he is definitely, but then I decided this was a bad thing. How I came up with that assumption I can’t tell you, it isn’t, it is a wonderful thing – A-
– Slim Slow Slider/I Start Breaking Down (Live) – Van Morrison – I saw Van three times on the 2009 tour, and the third time, this version though not this take of this song, was the greatest moment of them all. This isn’t as good, but it the live at Hollywood Bowl track gives you a sense of wonder at what it might have been – A-
– Prisoner – The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey – A major song here off his increasingly enjoyable new album – A-
– My Heart’s Not In It – Yo La Tengo – Opening track, a real pretty original (I’m guessing) and a quietly lovely dream of a song – A-
– Hear My Train A-Coming – Jimi Hendrix – From the legendary Atlanta Pop Festival back in 1970 -a really good one, post-Experience and with everything where you’d want it. The guitar solo is the personification of freedom at this July 4th gig – A
– Things They Buried – Grandchildren – ho hum dark synth thingy – C-
– Let It Be Now – Liam Corcoran – You know how some songwriters you just “get”, when he got to the piano frills on the break I realized it is really simple. I like the way these guy writes songs – A-
– The Hills – The Weeknd – My second fave song off the newbie – A
– Mountain AT My Gates – Foals – The second best song on the newbie – A-
– The Happy Hour – Monk Parker – Wow, like Mark Knopfler on ambient – B+
