10 Songs: Friday, June 26th, 2015

randy-newman-7701

1 – I Think It’s Going To Rain Today – Randy Newman – He sounded like Mel Torme with a cold and the piano playing was so quiet and the downbeat of the down beat so down beat, it was hard to tell when he was joking and when he had stopped. On this song as well, where the emotions are written so large and small at the same time,  it is hard not to take Randy seriously, I always took it as a break up song, other people claim homelessness – A

2 – Free And easy (Don’t The Road I Go) – Dierks Bentley- Bro before bro existed and still a standard bearer with a whoop – B+

3 – There From “Summer Of ’42” – Tony Bennett – Best verse “…and if you’ve learnt your lesson well…”, in the movie my favorite bit is when he reads the letter from her: “Dear Hermie: I must go home now. I’m sure you’ll understand. There’s much I have to do. I won’t try and explain what happened last night because I know that, in time, you’ll find a proper way in which to remember it. What I will do is remember you. And I pray that you be spared all senseless tragedies. I wish you good things, Hermie. Only good things. Always, Dorothy

4 – I Took A Pill In Ibiza – Mike Posner – fuck it, it was something to do.. – A

5 – MariKKKopa – Desaparecidos – This is a catchy, smart, all out rocker – B+

6 – How Much I’ve Lied – Gram Parsons – This inspired in me a litany of people I am not supposed to have sex with – A

7 – She Keeps Me Warm – Mary Lambert – This is awful, be proud about something else – C-

8 – Faith – George Michael – Listen to this three times and just how terrible Adam lambert is becomes crystal clear – A

9 – Teach Me Tonight – She & Him – Proof that there isn’t a song on earth these clowns can’t destroy – C-

10 – Teach Me Tonight Live – Amy Winehouse – Every time you stumble by one of her songs, it is like being kicked in the stomach, pure genius – A
