1 – Genocide – Dr. Dre – If Kendrick phoned it “Bad Blood”, this is the real deal: a heads down full frontal attack on the Compton pecking order, and the best song about Compton since, well, in the past coupla months if you don’t include Vince Staples – B+
2 – Norf Norf – Vince Staples – A masterpiece off his great current album, “i aint never run from nothing but the police” is the sort of brag I can live with – A
3 – Broad Gold – Iris DeMent – The album is lovely but slow, the song is very lovely but slow -magical stuff in the middle of summer – A
4 – And I Love You So Undubbed – Elvis Presley – Or rather, the orchestration is quieter. Still beyond beyond – A-
5 – And I Love You So – Elvis Presley – The Today version, and Elvis is not making a bad song good, he is making Don McLean’s obtuse ballad a flat out masterpiece – A+
6 – Drag Me Down – One Direction – I couldn’t hear this till my twelve year old friend sang the hook for me – B
7 – Yes All Cops – Worriers – Agitprop and it sounds great, that guitar on the breakk is something else – A-
8 – Dragged Out – Chelsea Wolfe – “Ultimately, Abyss is like a nightmare. It consumes you, shows you a darkness you’d tried to keep away from, but in the cold of night, wide awake and heart-pumping you can’t deny you enjoy the thrill of it.” That’s from The 405 -C-
9 – Glorious You – Frank Turner – Just because you’re a manic depressive does not make your manic worth your depressive – C+
